About the breathing timer
This free breathing timer guides paced breathing with a simple animated circle: it grows as you breathe in, holds, then shrinks as you breathe out, so you can follow along without counting. Pick a proven pattern — Box breathing, 4-7-8, Coherence (5-5) or Calm — or set your own inhale, hold and exhale in seconds.
Paced breathing is one of the fastest ways to settle your nervous system — handy before sleep, in a stressful moment, between focus sessions, or as a short daily practice. Choose a duration, press start, and breathe. The screen stays awake and everything works offline, with soft cues you can mute any time.
Frequently asked questions
Is the breathing timer free?
Yes — completely free, with no ads, sign-up or app to install. It runs right in your browser.
What is box breathing?
Box breathing uses four equal phases — inhale 4s, hold 4s, exhale 4s, hold 4s. It is used to steady focus and calm nerves. Choose the Box preset to follow it.
What is the 4-7-8 technique?
You inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7, then exhale slowly for 8. The long exhale helps you wind down, so it is popular before sleep. Pick the 4-7-8 preset.
What is coherence (resonant) breathing?
Roughly five seconds in and five seconds out — about six breaths a minute — which many people find balancing and calming. Use the Coherence preset.
How long should I breathe for?
Even two to three minutes helps. Beginners often start with 3 to 5 minutes; you can pick anywhere from 1 to 15. Consistency matters more than length.
Can it help with anxiety or stress?
Slow paced breathing, especially with a longer exhale, can help calm the body in the moment. Try the Calm or 4-7-8 pattern. It is a self-help tool, not medical advice.
Will my screen turn off?
No — the timer keeps the screen awake while it runs, so the pacer stays visible without you touching the device.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Once the page has loaded it runs entirely in your browser, so it keeps working without a connection.
