Koi Pond Clock
Want rain on a window instead?
Cozy Clock puts the time in a warm serif over rain running down a window, a crackling fireplace or falling snow, with sound to match, made in your browser like the pond’s.
Open Cozy ClockA live koi pond with the time shining up from its floor, fish you can feed and a garden you can grow.
Koi Pond Clock is a live koi pond seen from above, with the time drawn as soft light on the pond floor and seen through the water. Koi and small fish swim over the stones and between lily and lotus pads, leaves and petals drift down onto the surface, and the digits shimmer under it and go soft wherever the water moves. It is a virtual koi pond, not a video: the whole pond is drawn in your browser as it plays, so there is no loop to spot.
It is an interactive pond, and it answers you. Tap the water to send out ripples and the fish darting away, and some of them come back to see what it was. Drag across it to leave a wake that pushes the pads and leaves aside. Hold a finger or the mouse on the water, or press Feed and tap where you like, to drop food, and the fish race in from across the pond. Press Plant to grow lily pads of your own, then water lilies and lotus that bloom over the hours, and tend the pond if you like: the koi get hungry and gather to beg until you feed them, and fallen leaves stay on the water until you tap them away. By day, butterflies visit the flowers and a dragonfly sometimes dips to the water; at dusk small insects glow over the plants; at night fireflies drift and the moon lies on the water. Turn on Rain and drops ring the surface, and with Wildlife on the fish shelter under the pads. The sound is made in your browser too, from the water and your ripples to birdsong in the morning and the odd frog at night, and it stays off until you tap Sound.
Leave it on as a calm second screen or a TV screensaver with the time on it, keep it on your desk as a zen pond while you study or work, or let it slow you down in the evening. It is an aquarium clock with no tank to clean. The screen stays awake while the page is open, Fullscreen in the options leaves just the pond and the time, and it runs in the browser on a phone, tablet, computer or TV, with no download and no sign-up.
Frequently asked questions
Is it a real video?
No. Nothing is recorded: the water, the fish, the plants and the light are drawn in your browser as it plays, and each fish decides where to swim as it goes. That is why the pond answers when you touch it, and why it never plays the same way twice. Once the page has loaded, it needs no connection.
How do I feed the fish?
Hold a finger or the mouse button on the water for a moment: a ring fills, and food drops where you held. Or press Feed in the options at the bottom, then tap the spot on the water you want; press Feed again or Esc to cancel. With a keyboard, move to the pond and press F to feed it in the middle, or Enter to make a ripple. The fish nearby race in from across the pond to eat it.
Do I need to look after the pond?
Only if you want to. With Pond care on, the koi slowly get hungry over the hours, then gather at the surface and beg until you feed them; about seven pellets fill them up. Your plants live for days, then gently wither, and a tap scoops a withered one out. Autumn leaves settle on the water and stay until you tap them away, and an untidy pond turns faintly murky until you do. Nothing is lost for being away: the fish never die, there is no score, and when you come back a short note tells you what changed. Pond care, in Settings, turns all of it off.
Can I grow my own plants?
Yes. Press Plant in the options at the bottom, pick a plant and tap the water where it should go. A lily pad takes root and is fully grown in about three hours. Grow two and the water lily unlocks, and once two water lilies have bloomed, the lotus does too; both flower about ten hours after planting. When the pond is full, scoop out a withered plant to make room. The garden is saved in this browser and shared by this page and the Koi Pond face on the main clock, and the reeds, irises and underwater plants stay whatever you grow.
Does the pond follow the time of day?
Yes. On Auto it follows your clock: a rosy dawn, clear daylight, a warm dusk and a blue night, when the moon’s reflection and the fireflies come out and the fish slow down. Butterflies and the dragonfly come by day and the small insects at dusk. To keep one light, tap the time of day in the options at the bottom to pick Morning, Day, Dusk or Night; one more tap after Night goes back to Auto.
Can I change how many fish or plants there are?
Yes. Tap Settings in the options at the bottom. One slider sets 2 to 25 fish, about a third of them koi and the rest small fish swimming in schools, and the other sets the greenery from Sparse to Lush: fewer or more pads, duckweed and reeds. Wildlife turns the butterflies, the dragonfly and the dusk insects on or off, Preview wildlife brings them all out at once for 15 seconds, and Pond care turns the hungry koi, the planting and the leaves to clear on or off. Settings also holds the clock itself: 12-hour or 24-hour time, and AM/PM on or off. Your choices are remembered in this browser.
Why is there no sound?
Browsers only let a page play sound after you tap something on it, and a pond that bursts into noise the moment it opens is not very calm. Tap Sound in the options to hear the water, the rain and your ripples, with birdsong in the morning, insects at dusk and the odd frog at night while Wildlife is on. It is made in your browser as it plays, so there is nothing to download or stream. If you left Sound on last time, it comes back with your first tap on the water.
Will my screen stay on?
Yes, while this page is open, in browsers that let a page keep the screen awake, so it can run as a screensaver on a spare monitor or a TV. Fullscreen, in the options at the bottom, fades the controls away and leaves the pond and the time, and the pond still answers your touch.
Can I use it on the main clock?
Yes. “Make this my clock” saves the Koi Pond face as your main clock without leaving this page, and the note that appears links to it. The fish, plants, rain, sound and time of day are one setting for both; there, change them in Style, under Koi Pond.
