Night Clock

Your sleep, from your next alarm

The sleep line reads the next alarm you have set in Alarms: when you would be asleep, how many 90-minute cycles that leaves, and the bedtimes that wake you at the end of one. Set one there and it shows here, and on the Night Sky face of the full clock.

A dark bedside clock with tonight’s moon and your sleep cycles.

bedsidemoonsleep

Night Clock is a bedside clock for a dark room. The time glows in a low-blue tint on a deep night sky with faint stars, and tonight’s real moon phase sits in the corner with how much of it is lit — no white screen lighting up the room at 3 a.m.

Pick the tint (Amber, Red or Moonlight) and the brightness (Bright, Low or Lowest) in the options at the bottom, or switch to Clock only to leave just the time and the moon. With an alarm set in Alarms, it does the sleep maths: when you would be asleep if you went to bed now, how long that gives you and how many 90-minute sleep cycles, and the bedtimes that would wake you at the end of one. The screen stays awake while the page is open.

Preguntas frecuentes

How is the sleep time worked out?

From your next alarm in Alarms. It allows 15 minutes to fall asleep, counts from then to the alarm, and splits that into 90-minute sleep cycles. The bedtimes it suggests give you six or five full cycles, so you wake at the end of one; once both have passed, it says so.

Why amber or red?

Amber and Red keep blue light, the part of a screen most associated with staying alert, to a minimum. Moonlight is a soft warm grey if you would rather not sleep in red. Low and Lowest dim the time, the moon and the stars; turning your device brightness down helps too.

Is the moon phase real?

Yes. It is calculated from the date against the moon’s 29.5-day cycle, so it needs no location and no connection. The phase name and how much is lit are tonight’s; the drawing shows the moon as it looks from the northern hemisphere.

Will my screen stay on?

Yes, while this page is open, in browsers that let a page keep the screen awake; Keep screen on, under Bedside under Settings in the options at the bottom, turns it off. Nightstand, beside it, keeps the screen awake too and dims it after a short idle until you tap.

Can I use it on the main clock?

Yes. “Make this my clock” saves the Night Sky face as your main clock without leaving this page, and the note that appears links to it. Your tint, brightness and Clock only are one setting for both; there, change them in Style, under Night Sky.
